This picture was taken on New Year’s Day. Our family hadn’t been to the ocean in awhile, we love going there to celebrate New Year’s, and the weather forecast was beautiful so it was meant to be. While our boy was exploring every tide pool that he could find, we met a girl who was doing the same thing, so every time they found something cool they would share it with one another. We saw a starfish (I know they’re technically called sea stars now, we still call them starfish most of the time), sea anemones, fish, and lots of crabs, including one that looked like it was covered in hair. (We looked it up later and believe they are called Hairy Hermit Crabs.)
Our new friend confidently dove her hands into every tide pool, clearly enjoying herself so immensely in her explorations that I asked if by any chance she wanted to be a marine biologist someday and she answered without hesitation a resounding yes. She showed us how to gently hold a crab without getting pinched, that’s when I took the picture above. Our boy had most surely found a kindred spirit, and would have happily explored those tide pools with her all day. I love being around people who are so clearly doing what they love, their joy is contagious.
I always like the feeling of the beginning of a new year.
