All things Harry Potter… that’s a theme we’ve had going this year. After reading the first two books, and then listening to the audiobooks this summer, the boy is all about Harry Potter these days. Last month B turned nine and we had a small birthday celebration for him. I know moms who plan elaborate parties and have all sorts of games and activities set up for the kids, and while I think it’s great to do what you’re enthusiastic about- I’m not one of those moms. We did have some Harry Potter themed decorations (thanks to grandma), and we made lots of food like we always do (I bake cupcakes and Jeff makes his famous potato salad), but when it comes to entertaining the kids- well, pretty much they just run wild outside.
We had an amazing thing happen at his party this year. We were at our favorite place by the lake, and in the surrounding woods our friend spotted an owl in a tree. It sat there for a very long time, in the middle of the day, letting us all admire it and stare at it forever and take lots of pictures. I don’t have a zoom option on my camera lens, so I wasn’t able to get a close up, but Jeff edited a few pictures I took to show the owl up close (those two above.) It was honestly one of the most magical things I’ve ever experienced. And everyone asked how we managed to get the owl to show up for the Harry Potter birthday party, so I guess our party planning skills are pretty impressive after all. 🙂
Then the Harry Potter love continued and B dressed up as Harry Potter for Halloween last week. He had insisted on not having a haircut in quite some time so his hair would look more “authentic” for his Halloween costume. All he had to do to get messy “Harry Potter hair” that day was to wake up in the morning and leave his bedhead, not brushing it at all, and then tousling it a bit more throughout the day to keep the wildness going. It worked quite well and he made a wonderful Harry Potter with his robe and Hogwarts tie from his grandparents, his glasses, lightning bolt tattoo, and a broom. I was honored to accompany him as Professor McGonagall. He has since had a haircut and was happy not to have his hair getting in his eyes anymore, which also comes in handy to better see the potions he is busy creating all over the house.
P.S. B isn’t the only Harry Potter fan in our house…. 🙂 Isn’t this the funniest picture?

Happy birthday, we share the same birthday and so my mind turns to send your boy a birthday blessing as i celebrate my own. Glad that you had a great day and wonderful that an owl showed up to make it that bit more special.

Harry Potter is the best! I wish that every few years I could magically wipe them from my mind…and then read them all again! I do reread, but it’s not the same as the first time.

Love you all!
