This is one of my favorite goats pictures of all time. I took it last summer. Mama Bree is below and Baby Lucy is above, basking in the afternoon light.
My mind is wandering to birth these days…. The birth of our baby this Fall….. And the births of our 5 pregnant goats, that are all due in May. (Anyone looking for some goats for their homestead? We are going to have a lot of goats for sale!) Thinking about birth has made me realize that I haven’t had much experience with birth in my life. I didn’t grow up on a farm where seeing animals giving birth was a common experience. And I’ve never seen a human being born. Last year was the first time we had goats born on our farm. It was also the first and only time I had ever watched a birth (our goat Bree giving birth.)
You can read my blog post about it here: Bree’s Birth Story
Having baby goats born here last year was such a magical experience for Jeff and I. We are really looking forward to it again this year.
At one of our visits to our midwife, I mentioned that my birth idol is our goat Bree. I told Anita about Bree’s amazing birth that we witnessed. She was powerful, in her element, and flowing with her body in a beautiful way. She was an inspiration! I know it sounds funny, but our goat Bree is my birthing inspiration. When it is time for me to give birth for the first time, I will think of her first birthing and how amazing and glowing she was. I will think about her calm wisdom. I want my birth to be as beautiful and peaceful as hers was. I pray that I can flow with the powerful birth energy as gracefully as she did.

I just want to say that I love reading your blog & kinda live vicariously through you sometimes. π I’m up in the westside of Portland & have 2 beautiful girlies & a dear husband & am working towards living a simpler lifestyle that encorporates many of the ideas that you write about. For example, I’m enthralled by the recipe book you’ve talked about & shared recipes from! I love cooking from scratch (though not so much the cleaning up afterwards – hehe).
Anyways, thanks for putting this all up for us to read. Have a wonderful pregnancy & birth! I had a waterbirth at Andaluz Waterbirth Center with my second & it was absolutely amazing. π
