You’ve probably noticed the few postings on Wooly Moss Roots lately. Where have we been?
I am sitting here, amazed at all we’ve accomplished these past few weeks.
We have we been busy. Every ounce of our energy has been going into projects around here and there hasn’t been much leftover at the end of the day (for blogging or anything else.) We’ve been practically living outdoors. I’ve hardly spent any time preparing meals in the kitchen like I normally do. We just come in for a quick bite to eat and head back out again. We’ve been living in our garden more than in our house. It’s exactly what I’ve been needing and I’m enjoying this time of year for all the outdoor time.
We get so busy with our business and all the aspects of daily life, that a lot of our bigger projects get put on hold. They slowly form, patiently waiting for their time to come. We dream big. There are endless things we want to do around here. For years, we’ve been wanting to put a fence up around the front and lower garden. The reason being that it would keep the dogs, goats and chickens out. The dogs can be destructive in the garden. When we let the goats out to graze, we had to shoo them away from everything we didn’t want them to eat (a big task) and if we wanted to let the chickens range it was bye-bye garden. So we dreamed of fencing it in, so we could have a large new garden area and the animals could free range on a more regular basis. After a long wait, the fencing was ready to go up and eagerly announced that it wanted to be priority number one for a little while.
I am happy to say that the fence is finished! It was a huge job- digging holes, mixing cement, setting posts, building gates, putting up the fence, making it animal-proof. It took us a long time to save the money to buy the supplies we needed, but we wanted to build it to last. When you save money for so long to do something you want to do, it makes you appreciate it so much more in the end. Everything on this homestead has been one step at a time. Slowly building our dreams. It gets better all the time. Sometimes we want to snap our fingers and have all our dreams formed right here right now, but it is so much more satisfying to create it over time. We are dreaming of planting blueberries (lots of blueberries) and grapes. We have dreams for every spot in the new garden.
The other projects we’ve done-
The clothes line out back collasped (the wood grew mushrooms and rotted, looked cool though.) So we recycled the parts and turned it into a wonderful cucumber trellis. Meanwhile, the laundry basket was turning into the leaning tower of piza. So we built a brand new clothesline that should last for a long time. The laundry pile is magically shrinking (hallelujah!)
And we’ve been working in the garden. With all this sunshine, the starts in the greenhouse are ready to go in the ground. We’ve been weeding, preparing beds, watering and building trellises. We harvested oregano, lemonbalm, mint, and catnip. The garden has never looked better.
We’ve been milking four goats every morning. Jeff milks two and I milk two. We’ve been making large amounts of goat cheese and kefir.
And our neighbors have been on vacation, so we’ve been milking one of their goats and feeding & caring for all their goats, ducks and cat for the week.
I’m just giving a brief overview of what we’ve been up to. Practically working from sun up till sun down, still managing to feed ourselves three times a day. See why we’ve been so busy?
Yesterday, after we went to town for errands, we both sat on the couch for a moment and instantly fell asleep. With very sore backs and immediately falling asleep if we sit for a moment, we realized it’s time to slow our pace down a little. So we are home on a Saturday.
And I am writing on here once again- feels good to be back.

It’s wonderful to have you back. I knew you were probably busy with a million things. You and Jeff certainly are busy people! Congratulations on everything you have accomplished!! I know how much harder it is to get things done when you’re extra-tired from carrying baby too. π
For me- small accomplishments. I’ve got a couple of tiny baby pumpkins out in the garden. I’m beyond excited. As I get bigger, hopefully so will they.
