Jeff and I LOVE live, raw, fermented foods!
Did you know that when you ferment foods the old fashioned way that it actually increases the nutritional content? Not to mention all the good probiotics it puts in your digestive tract. I could go on and on about how wonderful fermented foods are for health, but for now I will just say that they taste incredible and that’s my favorite reason for eating them.
Recently Jeff filled our kitchen crocks with pickles and sauerkraut. The cucumbers came from our garden and a local farm. The cabbage came from the farmer’s market booth we do trades with. Everything has been fermenting away in the crocks (filling the kitchen with the strong scent of pickles…
mmm.. mmm).
And then yesterday Jeff harvested peppers in the garden (for some added spice), and put all the pickles and sauerkraut in glass jars. Now we have all the fermented foods we can eat and we are mighty happy about it.
Here is the blog post Jeff wrote about it:
Kim- So glad you are enjoying our blogs! 🙂
Kefir is so good for you. If you look under ‘Soul Food Recipes’ category, I posted how to make kefir and all about it.
Food sensitivities are so common, it’s so good you are paying attention to your body.
I believe live, fermented foods are even better for you and more healing than probiotics, but probiotics are still good to do. The more fermented foods in your diet the better.
If you are wanting to learn more, I have two favorite cookbooks that teach how to make fermented foods- ‘Nourishing Traditions’ by Sally Fallon and ‘Wild Fermentation’ by Sandor Ellix Katz.
Happy Fermenting!
Lots of Love, Taryn
I’m loving you and Jeff’s blogs! Your recent posts on the pickles and fermentation make it all sound so yummy :). And in past blog posts you’ve mentioned kefir..something I had never heard of..I’ve been trying to find out more. I’ve had alot of sickness the last decade (and on and off throughout my life)..and I believe I’ve traced it to a food sensitivity. Just started seeing a natural doctor who agrees with me and she wants me on probiotics for a while while my intestines heal. I had mentioned kefir to her and she said I should use just straight probiotics..this is all new to me so still trying to figure it all out! I wish I had someone close by that could teach me all of these wonderful ways that you two prepare your foods! It all sounds so yummy and nourishing 🙂
Sometimes you can get really good deals at local farms.
Also, some farms like to do trades! 🙂
I really want to make pickles, but to buy the amount you would need to make some would be more than buying organic from the health food store. boo.
they look yummy!
