Today I would like to introduce you to one of our sponsors, Mountain Hearth Handcrafts, who is generously offering a giveaway to two Wooly Moss Roots readers!
(And if you want to know what the hottest thing is since long john underwear…well, keep reading!)
(And if you want to know what the hottest thing is since long john underwear…well, keep reading!)
The owner, Lara, is a close family friend. Lara is a homesteader, a mountain woman, and if I ever have a question about local flora and fauna, she’s the person I ask.
I know some of you read her blog, A Mountain Hearth , and you long-time Wooly Moss Roots readers might remember when I interviewed her in Meet Lara, a wild mountain woman, or talked about her beautiful farmhouse in Over the river and through the woods.
Today I want to introduce you to the wide variety of art that she creates.

(I love this picture of her below because she is cradling a basket of nettles in her arms as if it was a precious baby. I can so relate, that’s how I feel about nettles too.)
Mountain Hearth Handcrafts is the work of Oregon fiber artist, Lara Katherine Mountain Colley. Each piece is handcrafted from natural and recycled materials as much as possible, found objects from nature, and the intention of connecting people with the outdoors.
In Lara’s words:
I am a modern homesteader and outdoorswoman, striving to live a simple, sustainable life. I live in an old farmhouse on a small piece of land in rural Oregon with my husband, twin children, two dogs, two cats, two rabbits and sixty chickens. When I am not busy cooking, canning, growing food, camping, wildcrafting or tending our flock of chickens, I find great joy in creating with wool and treasures collected on my outdoor adventures.
I love making art that celebrates the seasons and brings them into the home.
Needlefelting wool is my favorite artistic medium, and I make wall hangings of natural landscapes and the folk tales set in them,
as well as seasons figures for nature tables.
I also do a lot with re-purposed wool sweaters, including the mason jar warmers and cast iron skillet grabbers included in this giveaway.
Creating art out of invasive plant species needing removal is a passion of mine, and my bird’s nests woven from European Dune Grass roots and Teasel magic wands are both good examples of putting problematic plants to good use.
By fostering a greater awareness of Nature in our homes and lives, I believe we may increase our care and sense of stewardship for the world in which we all live.
When you buy handmade goods from Mountain Hearth Handcrafts, your purchase directly helps sustain and support a family’s endeavors to live lightly on the earth.
~The Giveaway~
For the Giveaway, Lara is offering one of her
Cast-Iron Skillet Grabbers
and one of her
Mason Jar Warmers,
both pictured above.
I have not had the pleasure of using one of her Cast-Iron Skillet Grabbers in our kitchen yet, but it would be mighty handy.
Lara’s husband, Spencer, is also very artistic and created these new tags for her products, (which I think are really awesome.)

Here’s what Lara says about her Cast-Iron Skillet Grabbers:
Cast-Iron: It’s the hottest thing since long-john underwear!
These colorful 5 1/2″ cast-iron skillet grabbers are made of re-purposed wool sweaters that were felted in a washing machine, and stitched around the edges with wool yarn. They will save your hand from those absentminded grasps of hot skillet handles, and prevent blisters when wielding your cookwear to chase off surly visitors! I use mine every day!

Whenever I visit Lara’s farmhouse, she serves me tea in a glass mason jar, with one of her wool cozies on them. It makes for a very enjoyable tea time.
Here’s what Lara says about her Mason Jar Warmers:
Too hot to handle!
Too hot to handle!
Mason jars are a hot commodity around the homestead kitchen, holding everything from canned goods, to dried goods, to drinking water and hot beverages in the morning. These warmers are hand crafted from repurposed wool sweaters to go easy on the earth and easy on your hands.
This size of warmer fits snugly over a quart mason jar, and comes with this fun tag!

I LOVE her cast iron grabbers, and the mason jar cozies. I recently got a pattern to knit a cozy but I’ve been too busy and haven’t gotten around to it. I also LOVE her felted wall hangings. The runaway bunny one she did a while back is my favorite π

What a brilliant idea, silly me for never thinking of it – I drink my tea out of an old glass pasta jar (the lid makes it a safe portable vessel for herbal tea goodness!) I ooohed so loudly that my children came to look at the beautiful felted wall hangings you make! I love the fairies too, they look so little and delicate and perfect. My son liked the Greenmans children’s necklace.. love that face. Thanks for giving me a new blog to encourage me to follow my path! Carry on!
