Using clay on the face is well known for being good for the skin; it pulls toxins out and leaves it softer, revitalized and glowing. But did you know that clay is also great for bug bites? If you apply it fairly quickly after a bite, it will pull the “poison” out and the itching will vanish! It works amazingly well! If you wait awhile before applying it, the clay will still reduce the itching, but the sooner you apply it, the better it works.
You can also use clay as an all natural sunscreen (as long as you don’t mind looking like a goo creature in your garden.) Covering yourself with it is healing for the whole body. That’s why we like to have yearly clay days and become happy clay creatures each summer.
Whenever I use clay, I can feel it’s healing effects so profoundly, that it leaves me in awe.
There are lots of different kinds and colors of clay, from all over the world. A great place to purchase clay is Mountain Rose Herbs.
What do you use clay for?
What are your favorite kinds?

Hi Taryn! I never knew that clay was good for inset bites! I will definitely try this one, I don’t like being itchy.
Most of the time I use clay to pot with! I have an ancient wheel, and I love to spend time creating things. My children also have thrown a few pots. Although most of what we make doesn’t last long enough to make it in to the kiln in town, we have fired some ourselves in a bonfire. It works really well!

What a joy to read your post today! I am the mosquito’s favorite all-you-can-eat-buffet and I was rudely attacked this morning while harvesting in the garden. Thank you for this clay idea… it’s just what I needed to find!

I am an Etsy customer and am thankful to have had an opportunity to read your blog.
I enjoyed reading your postings. In regards to your clay mask, I will be sure to try Mountain Rose Herbs’ clay. I stumbled upon their products from Veg News Magazine. I have ordered their essential oils and have not been disappointed with their products.
Looking forward to reading more of your postings. Thank you for bringing simplicity back into my life and getting me to appreciate the “little” things in life. It is truly a blessing.

This is so cool – I didn’t know! We’ve been looking into natural sunscreens and have stopped using commercial sunscreens. I’m excited to try clay! Thanks, Taryn!

Yay, clay! I have used it on bug bites and stings, too. It worked really well! I think I also used it on poison ivy once.
Thanks for the idea about clay sunscreen – how brilliant! I think my kids would probably have more fun with it than regular sunscreen and it’s better for them, too…we just wouldn’t wear it to town on the bus… 😉 ha ha!

Love this – I have a very itchy mosquito bite on my leg that I have been so good about not itching. I do put straight lavender essential oil on it, which helps, but I would love to try the clay (and I need to order from MRH today anyways! Perfect!)

I’ve never used clay this way before. I still have some leftover from an old homemade deodorant experiment. Thanks for giving me some ideas on how to use it!
