Hands down that would be blueberries!
I’ve called several u-pick blueberry farms lately to inquire about picking and they said the blueberries are late this year. (Good practice for me in cultivating patience, right?) So I was mighty (happily) surprised when I saw blueberries at market! They must have an earlier variety than the u-pick farms.
Oh my, they were so good! Tart, refreshing, satisfying. I could eat blueberries till the cows come home. (I’ve always wanted to say that.)
I love seeing pictures of real food and have felt like sharing more on here for all of you who enjoy food pictures too. Here are some things Jeff and I have been enjoying from farmer’s market these past few weeks.
We made our last batch of sauerkraut with cabbage from Groundwork Organics and it turned out really good. I spotted some gorgeous cabbage at Lost Creek Farm‘s booth, which looks like it’d make some mighty fine kraut too.
Lost Creek Farm has gorgeous cauliflower! It’s huge and is the best cauliflower I’ve ever seen. We’ve been enjoying it steamed.
We also love their broccoli. We eat that lightly steamed too.
We love the deeply colored beets from Sweet Leaf Organics. And guess how we eat those? Steamed. (haha.) Seems that’s our favorite way to eat most of our vegetables these days. (Although when we have a working oven again I’m looking forward to roasted beets.)
And we love Sweet Leaf‘s tender, sweet carrots. We could snack on them all day long. (Bracken likes to chew on them.) And it’s not only the produce that’s sweet at Sweet Leaf, but also our dear friends Fenn and Tatanka. For years they have made visiting their booth at farmer’s market such a delight. They should win an award for friendliest service.
Since we don’t have our own eggs right now, we have been feeling so grateful for the Deck Family Farm‘s eggs from pastured hens. The yolks are nice and orange like they’re meant to be, telling us the hens are getting lots of good things to eat.
I know I’ve mentioned Oak Barrel Kombucha many-a-time. I’ll admit, we get addicted to this stuff. Our favorites right now are Ginger and Elderberry Ginger Nettle. A delicious, healthy drink.
We love the morel mushrooms from The Mushroomery. I’ve never seen them this inexpensive anywhere! Morels are our very favorite mushrooms. We like to saute them with lots of garlic. Yum!
Their white elm mushrooms are good also.
And we just tried porcini mushrooms for the first time and really enjoyed them. One of our culinary goals was to add more mushrooms to our diet and thanks to The Mushroomery, we are.
I was drawn in by the garlic from Lonesome Whistle Farm. Everything tastes better with garlic, don’t you think?
Tempted by the Brown Tempest Garlic.
Lonesome Whistle Farm also sells heirloom popcorn at their market booth. (We are not eating popcorn right now while we are on the GAPS digestive healing diet, but I hear this popcorn is the best there is.)
Other beautiful sights at farmer’s market………

“I could eat blueberries til the cows come home.” – You are too cute! 🙂
I really wish our farmers’ markets here in Hillsboro had more organic – & more produce in general. There is only 1 booth that has organic produce & they have had asparagus & cherries so far. 🙁 If you know of anyone looking to sell organic produce at a farmers’ market, send them to Hillsboro!

Oh yum, it’s a good thing I’ve got so much homegrown/Deck/market food grilling and baking here or I’d swoon with longing! Utter synesthesia tasting, err, looking at these pics!

I am truly envious of all the amazing food you photographed. My belly is rumbling! We are very hard-pressed to find organic food around here, and what we do get is mostly shipped in from elsewhere. Our farmers’ market is small, and as far as I know my friend and I are among the only local organic growers. You are very fortunate to have such a thriving market where you can get such wholesome foods.

Wow, I love to see all the wonderful things at the farmers market. Such variety! Unfortunately our local farmers market is tiny, but their veg and breads are beautiful!
Oooh, I can taste those blueberries now!xxx

oh, such lovely bounty!
my favourite way to have young, sweet beets is grating them raw and dressing them with lemon juice, olive oil, and s&p. i could eat them daily that way; so sweet and luscious!

$5/box for morels?!? If my car would make it, I’d be down next weekend! When we lived in Boulder, CO they went for $50/pound! Incredible. I love the blueberries, too. But, still all about strawberries up here…SUPER late start to the berry season, but I don’t mind – worth the wait!
