Yesterday we decided it was time. Time for what? Time to let go of the endless to-do list for a few hours…(when Jeff said there were a billion things to do, I looked at him and we both smiled: there’s always a billion things to do).. and play!
We decided to have a spa in our own backyard.
First we got out the henna.
Jeff had never experienced henna on his hair before. I’ve been telling him how awesome it is. We covered his hair with henna, then added some to his beard too. (We used neutral henna, so none of us changed our color.)
Then it was Bracken’s turn for his first henna.
And he was on-the-go again, around the garden, while I tried to snap some pictures.
Then it was my turn.
(If I would have been using a color henna, I would have wanted to cover my hair more thoroughly.)
After we got the henna on our hair, we smeared some clay on our faces and bodies.
Primal baby.
It was fun!!
Every year we love to have a clay day, usually in the summer, but we had never added henna to the fun before. Now we want to have henna/clay days much more regularly. I’ve written about how regenerated we feel after a clay day in this post, and how great clay is for bug bites in this post. But have I ever written about how incredible a henna treatment feels? I don’t think that I have.
I love the smell of henna. It’s a familiar smell, deep in my bones. It’s a powerful plant. I’ve felt transformed every time I’ve used it. I’ve felt my energy lighten and I’ve seen others’ auras brighten after they’ve used it. I’ve seen people glowing and asked them if they did a henna recently and they said “why yes.”
Then I saw an herbalist write about the changes she saw henna bring.
In Rosemary Gladstar’s book ‘Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health’ she writes about henna being used throughout history as a medicine, talisman, ceremonial substance, and cosmetic used to color hair and paint the body. She writes:
“I noticed early on that whenever I used henna on people, their energy changed, brightened, they seemed refreshed and renewed. It was different from going to the beauty salon and having their hair colored. People seem to feel better.”
I love the way she describes it and I agree!
Then she writes about henna being a magical herb and says:
“A wise old man told me that henna aligned with the polarities of the earth. I mentioned this in a class to a group of people I had just anointed with their first henna. One of the participants went to her psychic healing class shortly after we had done the henna. The instructor approached her, saying, “All the energy lines in the room are running around you, in fact, right through your hair.” She laughed and said she was a believer after that.”
.
Intuitively, I know henna and clay to be very healing and regenerating to the Spirit and to the body. It never ceases to amaze me every time we use them. When we need some refreshing and balancing, both work wonders.
.
How about you?
Need a little regenerating?
Some fresh energy?
Feel like having a spa in your own yard? Or home?
I highly recommend a henna hair treatment and some clay (on the face and/or body)! If you’re outdoors, you can get as messy as you’d like and can throw on a swimsuit (or not), cover yourself in clay and your hair in henna, let them dry in the warm sun and rinse off with the hose. If you’re indoors, you can keep things a little less messy, but still enjoy the benefits. We buy our henna and clay, as dry powder and mix it with warm water to the consistency we like, from Mountain Rose Herbs.
There are always many things to-do in our busy lives. We need to make play a priority. When we do, the benefits are delightful, don’t you think? A spa is one fun way to do that.
I’d love to hear from you.
What do you do to regenerate?
Do you like to create your own spa experience?
Do you have experience with henna? Or clay?
Do you love them?
