Joining Ginny’s Yarn Along, sharing what I’m knitting and reading.

I’ve made a little progress on the blue socks for Jeff. Though I am no longer considering these “socks” (since they are a tad roomy.) Instead, I believe they will make wonderful slippers (with the addition of some other cozy socks worn inside them.) I might even put soles on them. That way he can wear them around the house without wearing through the bottoms right away. The pattern is knit 3, purl 1 and it’s a soothing repetition, with a little mantra flowing through my head while I knit along.
The book I’m reading right now is called ‘Learning All The Time’ by John Holt. Our friend Sara (who used to write the blog Farmama) highly recommended it to me awhile ago. She said she wished she would have read it when her boys were younger. I didn’t expect our library to have it, but finally checked anyway. To my surprise (and delight!) they did. I was really happy.
It’s a fascinating book about the natural process of learning and I’m really enjoying it. I love the way John Holt thinks outside the box and looks at the bigger picture. He has a different perspective that I really appreciate. The word that keeps coming to mind while I read it is: this is so “refreshing.” What he says really makes sense to me. It’s so simple and so true. It shows how adults can help children learn and how they can impede it. It makes me reflect on my own learning experiences growing up. And reading it actually inspires an interest in math in a whole new way (that I didn’t ever expect to happen.)
Here are a few quotes from the book:

“Figuring out what you don’t know or aren’t sure of is the greatest intellectual skill of all.”
“…our minds are much more powerful when discovering than memorizing,
not least of all because discovering is more fun.”
