We know Earnie and Ellie (aka Rick and Heather) from the Eugene Saturday Market. (Before I ever knew them, I fell in love with their tall, whimsical wooden drawer boxes that I lovingly described to Jeff as “hobbit drawers.” Anything I place the word “hobbit” next to is a very big compliment in my book.) I’ve written about Earnest Efforts before in this post (with links to others.) What item from your shop do you use most?

Ellie: Years ago my Mom gave me a gorgeous wood hair barrette with the clasp screwed on (no glue!). I loved this barrette because it was not only beautiful but functional. When Earnie welcomed me into his life & the Sawdust Cathedral I immediately thought of that barrette and how we could make something similar. He helped me come up with a shape and sizes and what tools & materials I would need to attach the clasps. Eleven years later I proudly cut the wood myself and have created a variety of shapes for the barrettes on my own. I’m as proud as a peacock when I see a girlfriend wearing one of my barrettes. I wear my barrettes all the time and am so proud of my work that I guarantee the barrettes for my lifetime.

What is your workspace like?

Ellie: The Sawdust Cathedral is a sacred space for us, albeit a very dusty and often dark space. A few years ago my precious Earnie cleared out a space for my very own workbench. I love my space. Sometimes I don’t even work at it, but just stand there looking out the window at the woods and being in the moment. There is something special about a workbench, work space or studio; that place where the creative process IS meditation. Where we go to connect with ourselves as creator. The workbench is sacred space.

What are you excited about working on?

Ellie: I’m really excited about working with the raw elements of the wood. Last year I had an epiphany…I don’t have to remove all the raw beauty of the wood to create a barrette. The bumps and textures of a burl are still a possibilty, so I’ve been able to create some really incredible pieces and it’s allowed me to look at woods that I didn’t think I could use before. Being open to possibilities has allowed me to grow as an artist and a collector of more wood 🙂
