Our family enjoyed going to our first ever May Faire on Saturday at the Eugene Waldorf School.
Let me back up and start at the beginning of our day there.
I thought it might be chilly in the morning and dressed Bracken in the Milo vest I knitted for him, but it was already really warm in the morning and we immediately started shedding layers.
Before we even had our booth set up all the way, or the music started playing, or the festival had started, Bracken was ready to boogie down.
And these hay bales were pretty fun.
We got our booth all set up and then the festivities began. The parade came walking down the stairs with the bagpiper leading the way.
Followed by the May Queen.
The May Queen and the children gathered in the field by the May Pole. The fourth graders sang songs for the May Queen. Pretty much every time I hear children singing together it brings tears to my eyes. Then they did a dance around the May Pole.
It was a beautiful sight to behold! Bracken sat in my lap while we watched with delight. Jeff stood at the front of our booth and watched. It was really so sweet seeing the children all dressed in white, dancing while joyful music played on a warm spring day.
I wanted to share it with you and captured a short video on our camera. You can watch it here.
(It’s not the best quality, but it gives you an idea.)
This cracked me up. Bracken put on his dad’s glasses for a moment.
Being a goof.
Jeff and I took turns walking around with Bracken and exploring the Faire. There were lots of fun activities. We passed most of them by since Bracken wasn’t at the age to participate in them.
Bracken’s favorite activity? The bubble booth! He was so excited when we discovered it.
They had wire loops with a wooden handle to dip in bubbles. What a good idea.
And the music? Jeff and I both agreed that we loved all the music that played all day long. It was simply wonderful.
Our friend Lara, of Mountain Hearth Handcrafts, was our booth neighbor.
I had written a bunch of magnets last week and Jeff woodburned over the letters, so our magnet board was very full on the front of our booth.
And I did finish a kid’s wool elf hat just in the nick of time. I was so glad about that.
And I made this tiny kid’s treasure pouch. I had a little wool yarn leftover from a project so I knitted it, then felted it, and stitched up the edges to make this pouch. I added a sassafras button, a wool loop, and braided wool yarn to make the strap. Very fun to make.
It was nice to have grass for our floor. It was easier to let Bracken run around than it is at the Saturday Market because we were in a big field with fences around, rather than close to busy streets with traffic. There were playgrounds to play on too and Bracken wanted to take frequent visits to the slides and swings. He also wanted to visit the dunk tank regularly to watch the kids get dunked in the water whenever someone hit the target with a ball. It turned out to be a really hot day, so the kids seemed to be having a blast doing it.
It was a fun day.

P.S. I took a hilarious video on our way to market the other weekend. Bracken has a favorite Waldorf song right now that we sing each week in our Rainbow Bridge class. You might have heard it, it goes: “Spring has sprung said the bumblebee. How do you know said the old oak tree? I saw a bright yellow daffodil dancing with the faeries on the windy hill.” Bracken loves it and wants to sing it again and again when we get home. We taught it to Jeff and somehow we all started singing it on our drive to market. Before we knew it we were singing it in silly voices and getting seriously goofy. A word got changed, and there was some major rolling of the rrr’s. I captured some of that goofiness from Jeff and you can watch it here.
Be prepared to laugh. It really cracks me up!
