I’m finally posting this picture I took last week. A hummingbird got stuck on our front porch. That happens sometimes. They fly in and then they can’t find their way back out and exhaust themselves flying against the window. When birds have gotten stuck before, I’ve taken out a broom and tried to gently get them to perch on the sweeping end while I hold the handle and carefully move it outside. It’s worked quite a few times. When Bracken and I saw a hummingbird stuck on the porch last week, I tried the broom method. It didn’t work. The hummingbird was frantic by that point, and afraid of the broom and wouldn’t land on it. I didn’t blame the poor thing. So we went to get Jeff. He has a way with birds and has a special connection with hummingbirds. He has rescued hummingbirds before and they’ve befriended him, following him around the yard the rest of the summer. Of course he stopped his work and came to the rescue. He went right over to it and scooped it up in his hands. Surprisingly, it was so calm in there. I took the camera so as he opened his hands out in the yard, I could snap a quick picture before it flew away. (I didn’t want to scare it any more, but I also didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get the closest picture of a hummingbird I’ve ever had.) Funny thing is, it didn’t fly away immediately. It just laid there quietly in his cupped hands. (One wing was underneath it which is why it looks like it has one wing in this picture.) The stuff on it’s beak is cobwebs from where it got stuck in the window. After we admired the little bird in quiet awe, it flew off and joined all it’s friends that were chasing each other around the fuchsias. It was really magical to witness.
