A few weeks ago I was admiring all these raindrop covered St. John’s Wort leaves, wondering when the flowers would show up. Then the other day Bracken discovered the first flower and was so excited. Today there was a break in the rain and we all headed outdoors to harvest some comfrey we had been meaning to harvest for awhile. Jeff had been carving most of the day. (He’s working on some carved tree pendants.) We all needed some fresh air. We walked past the St. John’s Wort and it was entirely covered in yellow flowers. Everywhere. Amazing how fast that happens.
So while Jeff went down below to harvest the comfrey, Bracken and I harvested these sunny flowers. The mama robin was not too pleased since we were near the apple tree where her nest is. She put up with us (while scolding from a nearby tree) and was relieved when we moved on. We left some flowers for the bees, they love them. I forgot how much I loved the smell. It lingers on your hands after you pick them.
Bracken was so carefully holding the flowers for the picture. We hadn’t brought a basket out because we hadn’t expected to harvest them.
Today’s harvest will be dried and then we’ll use these herbs to make the salves in our shop.
