Sarah: “Lila” means purple in German. It is pronounced with a short “i” so it rhymes with “tequila.” Everyone in my family is a German citizen except me, and since we speak a lot of German at home, “lila” was one of my younger daughter’s first words. Purple is her favorite color. 

Sarah: The products that get the most use in our home are belts and snack bags. I wear my belts nearly every day, my daughter wears hers quite often, and the snack bags are in constant lunch box rotation. Someone in the immediate family uses at least one of every other item in the shop, but not every day. One set of luggage tags even lives in Germany right now with my older daughter!

Sarah: My husband and I are very lucky in that we both work from home. We share a workspace, which is a room near the kitchen. There are three large windows so we get lots of natural light. My side is called a “studio” and his is called an “office.” My husband is usually on the phone or concentrating on the computer and I am usually making all kinds of racket with the sewing machine. On my side I stack and hang my fabric on a variety of shelves, clear boxes, and a hanging bar in the closet (I swear I have a system!), and I have a large cutting table with drawers (it used to be a kitchen island), a desk with my machine and zippers and thread and stuff, and an ironing board. I have four different kinds of scissors I use most days, five kinds of rulers, and I use two or three different types of machine needles and thread every day. My finished pieces and patterns are stored in the drawers of the cutting table. For most projects I spend as much if not more time at the cutting table and ironing board as I do at my sewing machine, so I really need to get some bricks or something to raise those up as I am quite tall. Every once in a while I say “ta da” when something is all done and my husband turns around to admire and pretend he understands all the zillions of steps it took to complete a project. I was so proud of him when he suggested adding an applique to the bottom of my puppet theaters! It was the perfect finishing touch!

 

Sarah: The majority of my fabrics (including the linen in the pouch) come from a small family-owned textile mill in my town. The fabrics printed there are designed and commissioned by high-end design houses, so they are not fabrics you can just pick up at your local fabric store or even order on line. Usually you have to be working directly with the designer on a project in your house in order to get access to them. Most people who have these fabrics on their couches or walls have famous names like Kennedy or Astor or Gore or Spielberg, but because I live quite close to the mill, I can search through the rolls of “extras” in their basement and choose small amounts to take home with me and turn into terrific things anyone can have! The fabrics are truly stunning, they feel sensational, and I love, love, love working with them. It is so fun to figure out how to use them with other patterns and colors, and to try to show them off in the best way. I made a cross shoulder bag for myself with one of them a couple of weeks ago and I adore how it came out. I’m making more right now for my shop!
