I’m so excited to share about our love for Scratch and Peck Feeds today! 

One reason we wanted to start raising chickens here again this year was because we wanted to be eating the healthiest eggs possible on a regular basis (and we do love the companionship of chickens, of course!) We wanted to feed our chickens organic feed and we were glad that the feed store had organic feed available. However, even though the ingredients were organic I wasn’t happy with the ingredients and was especially disappointed that it contained soy. They had a soy-free option, but it wasn’t organic. We decided organic was more important to us and so the organic feed with the soy felt like the best option at the time. We avoid soy in our house and we didn’t want to be consuming soy by eating eggs from chickens fed soy. (I’ve heard of people who thought they were allergic to eggs, but were only allergic to eggs from chickens fed soy. More info in this article.) The other disappointment about the organic feed was that our chickens didn’t like it at all. We tried the crumbles. We tried the pellets. They hardly ate it at all. One bag would sit around for a long time. Luckily, we had many kitchen scraps we brought them every day (and now they have a bigger ranging area.) But still, we needed a better feed. One day I was talking to our friend at market about chickens and out of the blue I said “I wish I could find organic feed without soy or corn in it.” That’s when she told me about Scratch and Peck. I think Jeff left the market with Bracken that very day (or soon after that, anyway) to head over and buy a bag. We were so excited that the exact thing we were looking for actually existed! Not only did they have soy-free feed, but also a corn-free option available as well. The feed was beautiful (and actually recognizable) and the high quality ingredients were incredible. What made us even more excited, though, was our chicken’s reaction to Scratch and Peck. They went nuts over it! They had never eaten so much feed before when we had given it to them. In our excitement, we gave them Scratch and Peck Feed before they had finished the bag of pellets we had bought previously. I tried to sneak some pellets in to finish up the bag before we entirely switched over to the new feed. They outright refused to eat the pellets at all. There was no going back. I noticed an immediate difference in our chickens. They started gaining more weight, their feathers became much shinier, and overall they seemed much more healthy. And I swear they’re happier! As you can see, we are huge fans of Scratch and Peck Feeds. I wanted to share our personal experience here. I told Diana, the owner of Scratch and Peck Feeds, that she has some lifelong customers!

We asked our favorite feed store, Diess Feed and Seed, to carry Scratch and Peck and they now do. I searched on The Scratch and Peck website and was amazed at how many locations in the Eugene, Oregon area are carrying Scratch and Peck Feeds. Unfortunately, most of the animal feeds on the market today travels thousands of miles before they reach our area (even feeds made with grains that have been grown in Washington). For us, that overly large carbon footprint is unacceptable.

Our business operates on the belief that doing what’s right and making a profit aren’t mutually exclusive goals. We produce every sack of animal feed with that obligation in mind.
Although big business is most responsible for creating the unsustainable system our agricultural industry relies on, our hope is that small businesses and their devoted customers hold the key for fixing those mistakes.
