That title pretty much sums it up. Fresh sprouts in the middle of winter are simply wonderful! When you’re missing the fresh produce from the garden and farmer’s markets, when you’re salivating over all the pictures in the seed catalogs (and dreaming of what to plant)…. there’s nothing like some crunchy yet tender green sprouts, bursting with life, to munch with your lunch.
I’ve written before about craving raw, fresh foods in winter and about how we finally decided to purchase a sprouting machine, which has made keeping fresh sprouts continually in our home so much easier! Besides sprouts being incredibly good for you (and delicious, in our opinion), they are also very economical.
I wanted to share some of the things we’ve been sprouting lately.
Jeff brought this tray of wheatgrass out of our sprouting machine and next to the sink so it could get a little sunlight. We used to plant wheatgrass in trays with dirt in the winter and kept them watered near the warmth of the woodstove. We just sprouted some in our sprouting machine, but I think we’ll go back to the tray method. The sprouting machine is our preferred method for all other types of sprouts, but with the wheatgrass we want more quantity which planting in trays certainly gives us. We use wheatgrass for juicing.
Here is a peek inside our sprouting machine.
Lately we’ve been sprouting radish, red clover, crimson clover, fenugreek, broccoli, and mustard.
Some clover seeds spread out in a tray, ready to start sprouting.

So, tell me, how do you satisfy your craving for fresh foods in the middle of winter?
