On Sunday we took a trip to the beach. After seeing how much fun Bracken had playing in the sand and water at Peanut Island, we thought he’d love to get some more of that. We also brought a bucket and shovels, which made for even more fun to be had. (You can probably guess that he didn’t want to leave at all.)
My mom had gotten him a shirt made to protect from the sun, a sunhat, and swim shorts. He was all set.
Bracken played in the water with Grandma Julie. And the times he got splashed in the face? He was a good sport about it and thought the salty water tasted “yummy.” I realized it was his first time actually swimming in the ocean, since in Oregon he had only dipped his toes in the chilly ocean water. Though it is the middle of winter, the ocean in southern Florida was warm enough to swim in.

I hadn’t planned on swimming. I don’t have a swimsuit that fits anymore and didn’t end up getting one before my trip. I was happy to sit on the sand and watch the waves. But then that ocean was calling me and I just had to swim. A bra and underwear are just like a swimsuit anyway, right? So I dove in. And it felt absolutely incredible. Sam and I swam together a little bit and laughed every time the waves hit us. After we got out, I loved the feeling of the salt water on my skin and didn’t want to wash it off later when we got home.

Going to the ocean always feels good for the soul and it had been a long time since I’d gone swimming in it!
