The last few days we’ve had our first harvests out of the garden. They’re little harvests, just bits of green, but it feels so good to be walking outside with a colander in hand and coming back indoors with good things to eat. We’ve been harvesting watercress for salads and just a bit of kale for soups. Bracken’s favorite thing to harvest right now are the chives, which he grabs by the handful. We cut them up to put on salads and to sprinkle over eggs. I’ve discovered something about chives: I really like them best when they are raw. I don’t think I ever want to cook chives again. They’re so incredibly good when they are raw, giving a gentle onion flavor to everything. We’ve been checking the nettles and they’re still very tiny, they’ll be ready soon. Yesterday I went to bring in our colander of greens and had some eggs in hand. We gather them throughout the day, whenever we happen to go outside. I looked down and thought: I’m grateful for all of the food I eat, but the food that means the most to me is always the food that I grow, harvest, gather, and prepare with my own hands.
