Recently Jeff said to me: “I’m pretty sure we have a rooster.” A few days later I heard a crow coming from the chicken yard. And then we spotted him. It was the barred rock I’ve been noticing since they were just tiny chicks, the one that was lighter in color than all the rest. The one I thought was especially beautiful. Yep, it’s been confirmed. We’ve had roosters here before, but we’re not yet sure if we’re going to keep him or not. It’s too soon to tell. I do so love the sound of a rooster crowing, I must say. But we’ll see what his temperament is. I’ve been secretly hoping we can keep him, however Bracken picks up our chickens regularly and we’ll see how friendly this rooster is with Bracken. We told Bracken if it’s a nice rooster than we’ll keep it and if it’s a mean rooster than we won’t. Also we had some roosters in the past that were pretty nasty with our hens, pulling their feathers out and we’ve been enjoying the peacefulness of our flock and don’t want that to happen again. (The other day Jeff said he did see him go after a hen and one of our ducks got between them and protected her! How sweet is that?) When the rooster didn’t let Bracken pet him the other day he declared it was a “mean rooster”, but I thought I heard him say later that it was a “nice rooster.” We’ll just have to wait and see, but in the meantime, he needs a name.
