How did your business come to be?

RBP_1054Sarah: After 15 years as an educator, I taught myself to sew about five years ago. It started just as a hobby, with a dress for my daughter here, or a set of pjs for my husband there, but it is now a full-blown addiction. I opened my shop fairly soon after those first pjs and dresses but as my sewing and pattern-making skills have grown I have created new products with increasing complexity. Continually developing new items for my shop allows me to sharpen skills, which keeps my brain happy, as well as to bask in creativity, which keeps me sane and balanced. I don’t cut corners (except literally, with very sharp scissors), and I set a very, very high bar for the quality of my sewing.

What is the story behind your business name?
 Sarah: “Lila” means purple in German. My family is bilingual and lila was one of my daughter’s first words. She loves purple and in fact was recently overjoyed to find purple sneakers in our favorite consignment shop. Turns out there is a lot more to the word “lila” than I realized when I first came up with it as a shop name. I wrote a blog post about it here.

Are you excited about anything new you’re working on?
 Sarah: My list of ideas for new projects is incredibly long. I don’t think I will ever get to making all of them. But recently the mill, where I buy most of my fabric, has been printing gorgeous, strong patterns on medium weight canvas, perfect for things like farmer’s market bags, storage buckets and baskets, pillows, and the puppet theaters I’m in the middle of now. I’ve also been toying with the idea of making tooth fairy pillow kits, which would include all the fabrics and threads needed, directions (of course) and wool roving for stuffing. These would be handsewing projects to do with young children. My own six year old attends a Waldorf school and has plenty of sewing experience already, so I know other kids can do this too!

What inspires your creations?
 Sarah: The fabrics I use are responsible for the products I make. It sounds strange, but when I go to the mill and see something I love, it’s usually because I can imagine it as an X, Y, or Z item. I don’t usually dream up the types of things I want to make before I see the fabric. I’ve never found fabric anywhere in the world (and I’ve looked on three continents and counting) that is a gorgeous as what is handscreened in my own little New England town. Most of the fabric designers who use this mill send the fabric out to become pillows or upholstery. I love figuring out other places to put it, like aprons or capes!
