Last week we decided to take a quick hike in the woods behind our house to see if there were any chantrelles up there. It was pouring out, but underneath the trees you don’t get as wet. And in the forest you seem to forget things like staying dry as you crawl on all fours beneath the underbrush in search of those golden treasures. (Does anyone else do that? The possibility of finding mushrooms makes me willing to do some primal crawling.) They really do glow in the forest on a rainy day, but they can hide beneath the leaves, so you need to scan the forest floor with your “mushroom eyes.” We ended up finding a handful, enough to enjoy with one meal. (Jeff sauteed them with garlic like usual and they were amazing.) We were happy we found some. And while we were up there we also found a bunch of ripe huckleberries. What a treat. Then we came inside, warmed up and dried off by the woodstove, and I took clumps of moss and pine needles out of my hair. Sometimes I almost want to keep them there and let the magic of the forest linger a little longer.
The berries aren’t dried up yet? good news. We are going to Reedsport on Sunday to visit family. I thought it would be way too late for berries, I know a couple great spots for mushrooms and berries, maybe we will be lucky. Just love the blue hat in your next post, so cute.
I was surprised that the berries were still good too. Have a great trip! Hope you find some chantrelles & huckleberries. π
Natural treats to enjoy – YUM!
Absolutely I will crawl in a downpour through the woods for mushrooms. I love your ‘mushroom eyes’. Never heard that. YUMMY!!! I love mushroom hunting because I dream the craziest dreams about mushrooms π
I so wish we had woods to hunt mushrooms in. Here in the desert we have drive so far to get to the mountains.
How wonderful to be out in all that grandeur! What a beautiful memory made!
do you ever cook chantrelles with white sage ? that’s our favorite was to sautee them, the two earthy, grounded flavors seem perfect for each other π
So beautiful!! I received my buttons yesterday…was so excited. They are absolutely beautiful thank you so very much!!! Love them
Blessings to your little family π
Living the way we are meant to live, being incredible stewards of what we’ve been yields incredible rewards beyond compare! <3
You would turn into the forest fairey if you left the moss and pine needles in your hair. What a marvelous idea…
to be blessed with the whispers of the forest…just precious.
