Over the weekend Jeff made some homemade chicken broth, then started adding some vegetables to make a soup. To me, homemade chicken soup is the ultimate comfort food. I couldn’t wait to dish up a bowl. He said it needed some more vegetables and I knew just what it needed. It needed some greens! It needed some kale. Bracken (with raincoat) and I headed out to the garden with a basket. We searched all around the garden and ended up with a humble harvest of kale. Jeff says kale is sweet after a frost and I think that was right about this kale. It was a wonderful addition to the soup and something felt so good about being able to harvest something, even if a small amount, from the garden in the winter time. Maybe someday we’ll get more into the rhythm of gardening year round. Local farms can grow so much around here with the help of a greenhouse. But for now I’m just grateful for that basketful of kale that made it’s way into our home on a rainy winter day.

How blessed you are to have fresh things in the middle of winter (we are under a foot of snow at the moment!)
I hear you about chicken noodle soup! We were blessed with not one, but two free turkeys last thanksgiving! We baked one last week and made homemade turkey noodle soup last weekend (we still have plenty left over for turkey casserole)
