On Sunday I realized I wasn’t going to be able to wait until the day I had planned (Wednesday) to go to the laundromat. (Have I told you our washing machine is no longer?) So we made a spur of the moment decision to go to town, put our clothes in the washing machine at the laundromat, get smoothies, and go visit a kite shop. When Jeff and Bracken had gone on their adventure to get a butterfly net recently, they saw a kite shop they wanted to visit. Jeff told me his plan about going to the kite shop, but we didn’t say anything to Bracken and let it be a surprise. They picked out a butterfly kite and he was so excited.
We swung by the laundromat to pick up our clothes and then headed to the beach. (I don’t dry our clothes at the laundromat because it saves so much time and money. Instead we bring them home and hang them on the line. We don’t have a dryer at our house anyway, so hanging clothes to dry is part of our normal routine.) When we got to the beach, it was a rare day with hardly any wind at all. (When does that happen? It’s always windy there.) It wasn’t great for kite flying. Bracken was very frustrated and disappointed about that, but later when I looked through pictures I saw his smiles and he must have enjoyed himself more than we thought. Jeff had tried to do something to surprise Bracken and make him happy, but the wind wasn’t cooperating. We took turns running to get the kite to fly, but even at a full run it wouldn’t stay up for very long. Jeff was looking up at the kite while he was running and ended up falling in a hole and twisting his ankle. Overall the experience didn’t turn out quite as we had hoped, but I’m still glad we went. (Oh, and forgive the pictures, with spots all over the lens.)
My mom joked that I had celebrated Jeff and I’s anniversary on Saturday by spending time with a friend and he had celebrated by being at market. That made me laugh, and it was true. Jeff did make us a gourmet meal that night, which made us all very happy. Our adventure on Sunday felt like we were celebrating it further, even though it ended with Jeff limping with a twisted ankle and Bracken in frustrated tears. We’ll go to the beach to fly the kite again and hopefully next time we’ll have some good wind!
happy anniversary! how long has it been? maybe you two can have a mom and dad night when boy bracken sleeps and enjoy your love, life and have a night time picnic with lanterns and garden goodness! its so special at night so quiet and lovely and cozy 😉
Thank you Sarah! It’s been 7 years married, 10 years in each others’ lives. And what a lovely idea. 🙂
I hope Jeff’s ankle is doing okay. Ouch!
Our dryer is used so little that it’s 25 years old and still going strong. I either dry clothes on the line in good weather or on a rack by the woodstove. It just doesn’t make sense not to, and who doesn’t love to climb into line-dried sheets at the end of a busy day.
Happy kiting – when the wind picks up!
Oh dear, how disappointing for you. I hope Jeff is soon better. Poor Bracken, hopefully you will get some windy weather and free time on the same day soon 🙂 Are you hoping to be able to fix your machine or does it mean a new one? We too don’t have a dryer but I love washing hangning on the line and Abi is always very good about helping me hang it out. x
