It’s been cold here and what a difference it makes when the fire gets going in the woodstove and warms the house up in the mornings! It transforms our whole living space, that warmth. I added some logs to the fire and then snapped this quick picture before closing the door again. Someday I’d love a woodstove with a glass door on the front, so we can always watch the flames. I swear it makes you feel even warmer when you can see the fire as well. The other day Bracken and I were reading one of our library books together and came across a poem by William Blake that stuck with me. I love it.
Fire, you handsome creature, shine.
Let the hearth where I confine
your hissing tongues that rise and fall
be the home that warms us all.
When the wind assaults my doors
every corner’s cold but yours.
When the snow puts earth to sleep
let your bright behavior keep
all these pilgrims warm.
They who never did you harm
raise their paws a little higher
and toast their toes, in praise of fire.

Love it.

It’s -3° and will drop another degree or two before the sun rises. I’m grateful for the woodstove and more than enough firewood. We have a propane furnace in the basement for backup heat but it’s not warm heat like the woodstove.

Lovely poem! The wood stove I grew up with had a glass window in the door and it really is wonderful to watch the flames.
