Bracken and I went on an adventure to Springbank Farm in Lebanon, Oregon last week. Michelle had a booth near us at the Mother Earth News Fair and it was a pleasure to get to visit her family’s lovely farm! (I love that historic barn and seeing the one-room schoolhouse they saved.) It was a bit of a drive for us, but Bracken got rewarded with blueberries and that certainly makes any drive worth it for him. We did our first blueberry picking of the season! When we pick blueberries, it makes it feel like summer has officially begun because in our family summer is just not summer without blueberry picking.
While I was snapping some pictures, Bracken got busy picking berries. Being in the blueberry fields every summer since he was a baby has made for quite the picker. We weren’t there long because of our busy schedule of errands that day, but we filled up our bucket, bought some flats, and enjoyed eating those -taste of summer- blueberries on the drive home. It takes a lot of blueberries to get us through until next year’s blueberry season, so we have more picking yet to do this year. For those of you in the area, their u-pick field is currently open. For those of you far away who aren’t able to visit Springbank Farm in person, they have their delicious Blueberry Wine for sale on their website. I sampled it and it’s amazing!

We have been picking huckleberries like MAD! With the wet Spring we had, there have been tons of them. As you drive up the canyon, you can smell that sweet smell. The season came early this year, they say due to global warming. My fingers are stained that lovely purple. And of course eating the harvest!

Thanks for all your sweet comments, Karyn. It’s nice to hear from you. Glad to hear it’s been a good huckleberry year where you are! 🙂

How fun! Those berries look amazing. I would have eaten all I picked. They are so much better right off the bush. I have 8 bushes here in my yard and I go out every morning and pick all I can and eat them right there. Sometimes I even share with my husband. But not much. He knows where they are.
I called our local blueberry farm a few weeks ago and they were closed due to this severe drought we are having here right now. It’s pretty bad. I have to water all my gardens every day. We did get some good rain last night and today! But we are about 6″ below normal right now. So enjoy those berries for me too!
