Well, last week was a pretty exciting week. B started second grade and got his first puppy. A puppy! Have you ever read the book Where the Red Fern Grows? If so, you’ll understand that B had the same affliction as Billy did in the story- dog wanting disease. We had been looking for a puppy for well over a year (at times looking more actively than others.) We researched breeds, checked regularly online, and put the word out to friends.
Though I haven’t noticed any allergies to dogs, I do get some allergies around cats when I’ve been in close proximity for more than a few days (or there is a lot of cat hair near where I sleep), and I had allergies with the angora bunnies we had for awhile …so I wanted to keep allergies in mind. For that reason, we looked into hypoallergenic dog breeds, just to be on the safe side. We were interested in poodle mixes, but they cost far more than we wanted to spend, and we didn’t want a pure bred pup.
Well, I guess good things come to those who wait. Jeff saw our puppy online and had a feeling that he was the one. We called right when the shelter opened, and a couple was already on their way to adopt him. We were all so bummed, even though we had tried not to get our hopes up. But in the end, it all worked out (the couple had another dog and didn’t think they would be an ideal pair), and we were able to get him after all. We brought this little fluff ball home from the shelter, falling in love with him right away.
Oh, and his name. B makes up words all the time and a few days prior had said “Una Sakiah. That should be our secret language. What should it mean? How about I love you?” That inspired the name for his dog, Sakiah. (Sounds like Suh-kie-yuh.) Since this picture, Sakiah had a haircut. (His curls remind me of a sheep. A little wooly bear, he is!) B is at the perfect age to have a puppy, he loves taking care of him. A puppy is a lot of work to be sure, and we have plenty of training to do yet, but we’re all thoroughly enjoying our new family member. We keep saying again and again how grateful we are that he came into our lives.

Oh my goodness, how completely adorable! I had a feeling the new pet would be a dog, B must be over the moon and he is just the perfect age to grow up with his dog, wonderful.
