Pallets…. we see them at the lumber store, the feed store, behind grocery stores…. all over the place! Jeff opened my eyes to the usefulness of this resource! Over the years, we’ve put pallets to many uses around the homestead. They’ve created gates, fences, compost bins, and a goat barn… to name a few. Now whenever we are in town (and have room in the back of the truck) we stock up with pallets because we always need them for projects. We know some local sources where they give them away for free (we’ve never paid for a single pallet.) We’ve gotten pallets made out of gorgeous hardwoods, and in all different shapes and sizes. I see big piles of them around town and don’t want a one of ’em to go to waste.
Here are some pictures I’ve taken over the years of pallet gates around our place.
We like to hang signs on our gates to make a cheery welcome and a magical entrance.
So, if you are driving around town and you see a bunch of pallets, don’t be shy. Ask the business if they give pallets away for free. You never know. They just might.
I hope this will inspire you to make use of pallets, to use them to create what you need at the time.
What things have you created out of pallets?

Your pallet gates have given me the insight I needed to create a couple gates of my own.
Many thanks !!

Your gates are beautiful! I love the idea of using pallets for them. And goodness, mostly all the work’s been done for you already! What could be better?!

Well if you guys decide to start selling signs at your booth, I’ll be lining up .. π

April- Yes, we made our love sign. It cracked so we took it out of our market booth and kept it. (Seems we only keep Jeff’s art when it breaks and we can’t sell it.) π
I did the writing and he carved it. He’s done a lot of custom signs over the years and we want to make more and have them in our booth once again.
No worries about the busy week. We’ll talk when the time is right. π

More like what haven’t we created out of pallets!
goat houses, chicken coop, compost bins, gates, people doors, chicken tractors, goat-no-eat-tree-boxes, firewood/hay shelters, toolshed/workshop, poop cart, broody hen box, tensioned fence corners…so lucky to have a friend who’s a trucker!

I love hearing about all your pallet adventures! Awesome! And I forgot to mention that we stack firewood and hay on them too! π
Lara- You guys inspire us too!
Lindsay- Look forward to hearing all about your pallet creativity!
Trish- Thanks! π
Ninabi- Hello! It’s nice to hear from you. I never thought of using pallets to make plant beds, great idea! Digging in the dirt is essential for staying sane, lol!
Hansen Family- Hi! It’s so fun to hear from new people.
Thanks! π
April- We made the love sign. I did the lettering and Jeff carved it in cedar. We had it for sale in our booth and then it cracked a little so we kept it for ourselves, which was wonderful! π It seems we only keep Jeff’s creations for ourselves when they break, lol. We are wanting to sell more signs in our booth again, we are just having a hard time keeping up.
I understand about being busy. No worries. We will chat when the time is right! In fact, I feel some hiking together in our future. π

We also made our compost bin out of pallets! What wonderful ideas, Taryn. On a side note, where did you get the ‘love’ sign (or did you make it?). It’s beautiful!
Sorry I never got around to emailing you this weekend, it’s been an incredibly hectic week! Please know your words in my post last week still make me smile and touch me deep in my heart and soul. Thank you for that. π

We use them when we can get them too… goat shelters, compost bins. I love your gates! In fact, gates are just inviting to me. I want to see what is on the other side and the signs you put on them are perfect. Enjoying your blog!

Once when we had to live in a condo for three years I used pallets to make planting beds for our patio. I was so hungry to nurture plants and tend a bit of soil that I was so very grateful to have those pallets.
The men at the grocery store laughed at my joy that they were free but I didn’t care- that bitty little garden plot kept me sane until we moved on to bigger spaces!
Trish says
I have only made a compost heap from pallets.
Oh how I love your signs!
Much love

My hubs and I have been talking about using pallets for a while but just haven’t done it yet. Just today I saw a huge pile with a “free” sign attached – thanks for the extra inspiration!
