Today’s giveaway is brought to you by WoolyMossRoots Sponsor- Homesteader’s Supply.
I’m so glad to welcome Jerri and her business, Homesteader’s Supply, here today. I’ve enjoyed connecting with Jerri through e-mails and then I read her story about how she began her business and was really touched by what she had to share. I’m looking forward to sharing her story with all of you here today. I love seeing people in the world doing what they are passionate about and Jerri is certainly doing that. Homesteader’s Supply has a great selection of offerings and I have quite a few items on my wishlist. I’m also really excited about the amazing giveaway being offered here today. The giveaway item is perfect for those who are new to fermenting, as well as those with plenty of experience!
You can stay in touch with Homesteader’s Supply on their blog, facebook page, and on pinterest.
Welcome to WoolyMossRoots! Please tell us about your business and how it all began.
Jerri: Grew up in Florida in a city lifestyle, moving to Montana and then later to Arizona but always living in a rural location to pursue my interest in homesteading, learning what I could about the basics of canning, and gardening, and healthy food preparation and preservation. In AZ I had a place out of town on 5 ½ acres of land and the ‘bug’ hit to become more self-sustaining for health reasons after learning about the contamination and alteration of our food sources in this country.
The farm started with one jersey cow and some chickens and ducks. The bounty of eggs and natural milk was a godsend! I worked fulltime as a nurse at our local VA, but in 2008, life ended as I knew it… I was fired after reporting abuses to the veterans. Being a federal whistleblower does not make it easy to obtain another job especially after I allowed the newspaper to use my name in their article. Now my farm had to be the main support, growing to a list of 3 jersey cows, 2 angus cows, sheep, 2 emus, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, guineas, peacocks, pigs, 1 goat, 2 dogs, 1 cat.
Our food source was now fresh raw milk, homemade butter and cheese, beef from our own butchered meat cows and pork from our own butchered pigs, eggs of various sizes from all the birds, even the emus. Grew veggies and herbs in large organic garden from heirloom seeds, preserving what we could. Started learning to tan the hides, sold peacock feathers, sold emu eggs, traded many things, helped neighbors and friends with our little farm, especially in the economic downturn we gave away as much of our bounty as we could to help others in our community.
When our first cow calved, in an effort to obtain a stainless steel milking pail, I went through several from India and China, all bend, break and rust. Found one manufacturer here in the states with solid one-piece pail that lasts forever! Then I was on the search to find udder balm and fly repellent without harmful chemicals, and also quality kitchen products to process our bounty… grain mill, meat grinder, quality butchering knives, cheese making supplies, shears for the sheep, products to keep the watering buckets from freezing, and so much more. We helped our friends and neighbors so they could also get these quality products. Then one day, a couple friends said “You should do this as a business”!
This was the “bug” that hit me to start a meaningful business that I could run from home while working on the farm, something I personally knew and felt passionate about… being self-sufficient, homesteading, and helping others! That was how www.homesteadersupply.com got started! We have grown so much thanks to our followers and customers, but we still offer the very best customer service!
In the last couple of years I have come up with some ideas that have turned into products that we manufacture… all natural products made here in the USA! I am most proud of our Ultimate Cheese Press, which we offer in hard maple and hard cherry wood! Specially designed like no other out there! We also have our Prepper Pro used for fermenting, making butter, jam/jellies, and so many other uses in the kitchen. We also came up with the original fermenting lids called the Pickle-Pro Lids… both these and the Prepper Pro are in the Vegetable Fermenting Kit. And then there is our unqiue triple wood cutting board and rolling pin. All of our wood in our products are seasoned with only 100% Organic and non-gmo Coconut Oil.
In general Homesteader’s Supply carries such a variety of products that can meet the needs of those trying to be self-sustaining even in the smallest way. We always deal with reputable companies, and source as many American made products as we can.
We help the farmers , ranchers and homesteaders with equipment needs to care for their animals. You will also see on our website that you can find just about anything you are looking for to assist you in your homesteading adventure: making cheese, need a grain mill, stainless steel kitchen products, heirloom seeds, portable milking machine, boots, buckets, feeders, natural fly repellent and so much more! We offer our own kits for cheesemaking, fermenting, milking, goat rearing.. etc. We feel kits help our customers through the learning process as they usually don’t know what they need, and a kit will fill that need. Through our social media we try to educate our followers, and lead folks to other great informational blogs and websites. Homesteading really is a community effort, as no one can do it alone.

Jerri: My future dream: currently looking into the possibility of opening our first old fashioned country store, where we not only will sell products, but engage our community to assist folks in obtaining their farm fresh products. We plan to have space to offer classes on just about anything homesteading with many guest teachers. We would also like to have a café that would prepare foods sourced from locally grown farms. We are open to others that might want to jump onto the venture with us.

Aloha,
Mille grazie for the link as I’m always interested in learning more about urban gardening (but I have a black thumb!).
My mother used to make a lot of pickles in a Japanese pickle maker. Mostly with Chinese cabbage and kombu and sometimes with small Japanese eggplant. And we make a lot of tsukemono (pickles that aren’t fermented) with cucumber.
I always enjoy reading your blog!
Mahalo.

What a great giveaway. Fermenting foods/drinks is one area of preserving food I have never tried. A kit sounds like such an easy and less intimidating way to get started.

I’ve noticed Homesteader’s Supply’s name around a bit, but as I’ve been on a self-imposed spending freeze to save up for daughter’s braces, I haven’t stopped by the site for any shopping. Reading Jerri’s story about whistle blowing, I shall HAVE to stop by, even if I only get to “drool” and window shop. 🙂
Jerri, as a military “brat” turned military spouse, I want to thank you personally for reporting the abuse you saw. I’m sorry that it affected your employment (though it sounds like you’re much better off now); the military community desperately needs people like you. Thank you for being one of the good people when you were with the VA! Wishing you much success!
