While we were in Iowa visiting family, Bracken and his great grandma collected bark from her paper birch tree. She found a box for him to put his precious bark in so it would make it home safely in the suitcase. Bracken said he was saving it for an art project. I thought the idea initially was to draw pictures on it, but then he said he had a different idea. When we got back from our trip, Bracken asked me for my stapler and got busy. He had been drying flower petals as well as some ivy leaves and stapled those along with the bark. How creative! I can’t tell you how much Jeff and I love these works of art! Bracken told me that there was a petal that looked like a heart and he thought I would especially like that one. He was right, I do. Jeff and I want to frame some and hang them on the wall. Bracken has created an art form all his own, I think he’s onto something…

When my sister and I were little we would write messages to each other on Madrone bark and then stash the messages in our secret spot.
