I went to the thrift store with Bracken (I think it was last summer) and found a yellow frame with chalkboard paint inside, just waiting for something to be painted on it. I immediately knew I wanted to paint ‘You Are My Sunshine’ in yellow letters for my mom for Mother’s Day. I held onto the frame all this time and finally last week got it painted and then mailed out. When I was little and my mom needed to wake me up in the mornings, she would sit on my bed and sing “Good morning merry sunshine. How did you wake so soon? You scared away the little stars and shined away the moon…” and then she’d say “Good morning merry sunshine!” There were many, many mornings when she sang that song to me, it’s such a happy memory, and of course every time I hear that song I think of her.
I carried on the tradition with Bracken and on the mornings I needed to wake him up, I would sing that song to him. (Usually singing it quite a few times because he can be such a deep sleeper.) One morning when I sang it to him a few times, he finally opened his sleepy eyes and said to me “Good morning mommy sunshine!” It made me laugh and it warmed my heart and I loved it so much I can’t even say. He was maybe three at the time, I don’t remember now, but it always stuck with me.
Last week Bracken made me a Mother’s Day card at speech therapy and a handmade gift at our homeschool handworks class. He wanted me to open his present right away, but I told him I wanted to wait until Mother’s Day to open it. It was really hard for him to wait, but he did and when the time came to open it yesterday, he wanted to help me unwrap it. Even though Jeff had been sick, he woke up early yesterday and made a delicious breakfast and went out to the garden and gathered flowers to make a bouquet for me. They handed me the vase of flowers when I came downstairs. (Later Bracken started picking some flowers off for his projects and I asked him not to because I wanted to enjoy them longer, but it did crack me up.)
I did something nice for myself and laid on the couch for awhile and read a book yesterday. It seems I hardly read these days, so it was a treat. I told Jeff and Bracken that I wanted to spend some time in the garden for Mother’s Day (that’s what I always want to do.) The weather was so warm and just gorgeous, and we did get some time out in the garden. I hope all of you mamas took the time to do something kind for yourselves yesterday! (And may we all remember to do so every day!)

That is so sweet. I always sing the opening to “Good Morning Starshine” to my two girls when I wake them up. I hope that when they grow up, it will be as happy a memory as yours.
