With Jeff’s grandson turning one, and with his mama talking about doing a pumpkin theme, I immediately knew I wanted to knit him a pumpkin hat for his birthday. I was inspired by the pumpkin hats that my friend Nicole knit for her kids, which I thought were so adorable.
At the Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival, I searched for orange yarn, but I wanted a particular shade. I didn’t want something bright or too orange, I wanted something subdued, with an earthy autumn tone. I found just what I was looking for from Mosaic Moon. As soon as I saw the skein hanging in her booth I thought “Yes! This is what I wanted!” I got a fun skein of yarn with different shades of green in it, from Huckleberry Knits, for the stem of the pumpkin. The color changes made for a really fun touch at the top of the hat.
I searched for pumpkin hat patterns on Ravelry and there were quite a few of them. I decided I definitely wanted to knit one of the patterns with the ribbing because the hats with the ribbing looked more like pumpkins to me. I chose the Pumpkin Hat pattern by Amy Grace. (My Ravelry notes are here.) It was well-written, easy to understand, and easy to knit. And the finished hat? Adorable! Just in time for a little pumpkin’s birthday…
