Our homeschool co-op participated in a holiday fundraiser for a local museum and one of the moms asked if I would knit something to donate for it. It needed to be finished quickly, so I decided a mug cozy would be the perfect thing. I had never knit one before, and wanted to, so I was really excited about this little project. To stick with the holiday theme, I chose some red yarn (Quince & Co.’s Lark) that I picked up at Stash. I played around a bit until I came up with a pattern that would work. (I’m tweaking it, by the way, and working on writing up a pattern to share.) I thought red yarn would be a challenging color to match wood buttons to, but as I held up different buttons to see what I liked best, I came across one Jeff made from a red cedar branch and fell in love. It felt like just the right button for the project. I liked it so much that I made another one of these for a Christmas gift. I might be kind of obsessed with making mug cozies now…

this is great! I made a tea cozy for a colleague at work some years ago- but it wasn’t anywhere near as pretty as yours!

Hi Helen,
I made up the pattern as I went along. I am tweaking the pattern just a bit and working on writing up the pattern to share, I will announce it here when I have the pattern ready. 🙂 Thank you & Merry Christmas to you too!

That cozy is just so cute!
I’m sure one pattern could work for a variety if mug shapes just my adjusting the length of the button loop, except the really skinny ones maybe.
Happy Christmas to you all.

I agree with the first comment. Love the cozy. How can one make them to fit all mugs. Your project is beautiful.

I LOVE the cozy – if you make some up for the shop, I’d love to purchase one. I make a small pot of café Vienna in the morning and sit in my recliner by the window overlooking the Constitution Marsh off the Hudson River. Its so peaceful and I sip my coffee – so warming and cozy – BUT it cools off so fast. This would be perfect – in two sizes (one for thin china mugs and one for shorter rounder ones). I’m not a creative knitter but with a pattern from you it would be perfect. Perhaps you can also put “almost-good-enough” buttons – those not perfect enough to make it to the fairs but good enough to be loved on projects such as the warmers. Just dreaming, as they would be less expensive, I could afford them on my senior citizens social security budget. Hugs to you all.

Thank you! I do think it would be fun to offer them in the shop. Also, we often have “seconds” buttons and you gave me an idea to offer some of them online. I’ll announce it here when I do. 🙂
