This is what happens when I take too long to sort my photos… I end up sharing about fall things in the garden… in December. 🙂 I shared these pictures on Instagram and wanted to share them here too.
Growing hardy kiwis in our garden has been a dream of ours for a long time- ever since we were introduced to the delicious fruit.
Before our friends moved, they had a local nursery and we got our hardy kiwi plants from them. Then our kiwi plants waited in large pots in our yard for a few years, until we figured out exactly where we wanted to plant them.
We knew they needed a strong arbor for support, but the sunniest area of our garden was limited on space for that so it took longer than we expected to figure out just the spot.
This summer Jeff and I were determined to get them in the ground, though, and decided that building an arbor was a project we wanted to do to celebrate our anniversary. (We seriously love working on garden projects for our anniversary.)
We built an arbor at last! And what a good feeling it was to get those beautiful plants in the ground, they were becoming quite unhappy in pots. (We planted four of them, two males and two females.)
Since moles have destroyed so much of our garden (even killing large fruit trees and mature blueberry bushes), we bought mesh planting bags to plant our kiwi plants in from Western Planting Solutions. (Now we just need to invest in enough of them to plant everything in our garden!) 🙂
We got our first three kiwi fruits this year! It felt like the plants were thanking us for planting them in the ground. Those little kiwis were delicious, and we savored them.
I look forward to seeing our hardy kiwis completely covering the arbor, and we hope they’ll be covered in fruit and very happy in their new spot for years to come.

What a beautiful arbour you built and how lovely that it will always hold memories of your anniversary as well as kiwis.
