February was a month filled with hat knitting for me, and I have some hats to share here. Up first is a hat I knit for a six year old I love, whose mom is a dear friend, and who I’ve known since she was a baby. Bracken and her have been buddies since the beginning, and I love seeing how much fun they have together. She wears the hats I knit for her so much, I wanted to knit her another one for her sixth birthday. (Six? I can still hardly believe it.)
You might recognize the pattern because this is the third time I’ve shared this pattern here (yeah, I kinda love it.) The pattern is the Pom-Pom Hat by Anna & Heidi Pickles. (You can see the hats I’ve knit before with this pattern here and here.) The yarn is from Mosaic Moon. (So soft- merino and silk!) The main color I used was so unique and seemed to change color in different lighting (like a mood ring, remember those? I loved mine as a kid…), purple-ish, grey-ish, brown-ish. Earthy, with a deeper tone like a stormy sky. (Can you tell I get really into yarn colors?) The light pink yarn that I used for an accent color had such a sweet and gentle feeling to it, so pretty. (It went perfectly with the shells around it.)
I cast on for the project during our trip to Florida (and wound up the yarn there too, as you can see), right after I finished the cowl for my grandma. I love when my knitting gets sun-kissed, and imbued with fresh air, and yes… even when it gets sand in it. I don’t mind sand in my knitting at all, I feel like it adds a certain magic to the finished knit. (Do you other knitters feel that way too? Or would you cringe at the thought of sand in your knitting?) I always hope the person wearing what I knit can feel the good vibes woven in from that nature time, whether it’s at the beach, or in the garden, or at the park.
{Oh, and funny story? When I was crouched down taking pictures of that ball of yarn in the sand near that beautiful driftwood (it was pretty, plus I wanted to show the true color), a couple came over excitedly, thinking I was taking pictures of a crab or something really interesting. I said something like “yeah… I like to take pictures of yarn… sorry it’s not something more exciting” and they probably thought I was… weird, or dorky. It really cracked me up because the whole exchange was so hilarious!}
My friend shared these pictures of her sweet girl wearing the hat I knit for her and gave me her blessing to share them here. (Thank you April!) Every time my friend tells me how often her girls wear the hats I knit for them, it fills my heart more than I can say. That six year old is so full of life, she’s a total nature girl with an adventurous spirit just like her mama. I’m so grateful I could make her a hat to keep her warm on all of those adventures she’s been having and on the many more to come…

Aw I love this and your words about Hazel just make my heart swell! I feel the same about Bracken and your entire family, even though we don’t see each other as much as I’d love to. Can’t wait to see you all soon! Hazel just adores every hat you’ve given her 🙂
